It doesn't take time. But you and God, and God and you have become one? No. Because God is Infinity. And any time when you are finite, you are not God. You are good, you are better, you are best. You can find them in New York City. In 1982 my colleague (?) circled America to chronicle fourth parade, "The plight of runaway and throwaway children. " Four years later I traced roughly the same path down the east coast and up the west coast focusing on youngsters who have been forced into prostitution, their common opposition for survival.

Well, there has been progress in recent years, shelter and support programs remain inadequate considering the size of the problem, there are some first class programs run by extremely dedicated social workers but money is always short and volunteers are needed. Just how many juvenile prostitutes who are on the streets isn't known but Doctors Daniel Kempenger and Donald Pafenberg have used data provided by five hundred ninety-five police departments in fifty states, estimate there are between a hundred thousand and two hundred thousand adolescents and prostitutes with the medium age of fifteen.

The (?) this young, the victim was related by Judy Turner, a police officer who works in an unusual Miami-Dade County Task Force program that uses a novel approach in helping teenage prostitutes. Turner, a six year veteran patrols in plain clothes in an unmarked car with a social worker as her partner. When they spotted a youthful prostitute, they interviewed the youngster and arranged to get the child home. They visit and counsel the parents, clubbed the family into social service programs and follow up at regular intervals. The nine year old boy was the youngest we worked with. The neighbors told us that the boy would be forced to sleep on the front steps all night if he didn't come home with enough money. When we investigated we also found three neighbors, (?) age ten to thirteen, all prostitutes. Three young victims from one family is an extreme but unusual example of child prostitution. During visits to shelter and outreach programs around the country and in interviews with two dozen teenage hustlers are heard not only a (?) of horror stories but also some encouraging examples of youngsters who are being helped to get out of the gutter and start putting their lives back together. It evolved from an offer of refuge in his modest apartment on a freezing winter night to six homeless teenagers with nowhere to sleep. In New York City in Fort Lauderdale, I met two kids former prostitutes who were trying to keep their life together with help of Covenant House workers. Peter, 17, has supported himself since he ran away from home at the age of twelve to escape a brutal father, for five years he worked as a street hustler on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles as a stripper, Go-Go dancer, prostitute in homosexual boys and clubs in Washington DC, New York, Atlanta, Florida and California. Today Alice is enrolled in a long-term therapeutic program designed to help her overcome a history of drug abuse and regain her emotional health. She is receiving vocational training and has expressed interest in becoming a nurse's aide. Unlike the well-equipped, financed Covenant houses most of the nation's five hundred or so runaway shelters, about half supported partially by federal funds, tend to be smaller and limited by shoestring budget. Kids can usually stay from two nights up to a maximum of two weeks. Dedicated staff and volunteers compensate for shabby furniture and thread (?) carpets. Well, five hundred shelters may sound like a lot, it isn't.
