... Student: Today's class we'll be discussing Ardas, now Ardas means prayer. And we'll be discussing generally prayer in Sikh dharma and specifically the Sikh Ardas. And I think it's a very good definition of one time in class when class of Siri Singh Sahib when he was explaining that that what is God? And he was saying that God is the Infinity, which is the polarity of the finite, in other words God is the polarity of the man, already within us. So, God is already in us, but the Infinity with us.
So when I said to him, "Well, how can you pray then, if God is the polarity already part of us who do you pray to, you pray to yourself or what, now what is prayer? " And he said, that prayer when you come to Gurdwara or you got to a church, you got to a synagogue and you stand with your hands folded that's not prayer, that's preparation to prayer. And when we come to Gurdwara for service or whatever we are doing that's preparation to prayer, that's setting our mind so that we can come into a prayerful state.
to Gurdwara for service or whatever we are doing that's preparation to prayer, that's setting our mind so that we can come into a prayerful state.
So prayer is not that you are standing up and sing oh God help me and I'm in trouble and whatever, or even by standing up and with folded hands but the idea is that prayer is a state of being, it's a meditative state in which the being is merged with God. The being is merged in a vision of Infinity.
If we concentrate with all might on Infinity, you know on that concept of perfection however we have viewed in ourself and just concentrate and concentrate no matter what happens on the outside we just we are so concentrated on that, that state when it becomes to a place where we no longer have to exert any effort but we are just in it, that's the state of prayer. So then what significance or what place does prayer have in our dharma? And if prayer is the total merging of our mind our finite self in the infinite self then that is exactly the purpose of yoga, the purpose of prayer, the purpose of our whole dharma is to reach that state of prayer.
the infinite self then that is exactly the purpose of yoga, the purpose of prayer, the purpose of our whole dharma is to reach that state of prayer.
The minimum requirement when we come before the Siri Guru Granth Sahib is to sit with our spine perfectly straight so that the energy can flow up and we can our energy can rise so that we can become into that state of prayer. So once we are sitting in that state and we are before our Guru when we put our whole mind to it and we merge in that vibration and that's the state of prayer.
Thus the person who is doing the prayer that's the general prayer, now how prayer starts is in a congregation particularly in a Sikh dharma of course all through the ages men have looked to something to respond to their desires, so we need to think of the force of God being some force which can help us in all time of need, so that's why we say oh God please help me. When in actuality what's happening is we are putting out we are saying to ourselves I need this help what should I do? And since we are asking the question to our mind and then again our own self answers the question. We have to just put the question to our consciousness and it comes back.
the question to our mind and then again our own self answers the question. We have to just put the question to our consciousness and it comes back.
Now people used to come to the congregation and they used to say my fields are dry and we need I need funds because I haven't been able to yield crop this year and so some Sikh in the Saad Sangat will get up and say, you know I need this or I need that. And until today even in India, we have gone in India somebody will stand up in the Saad sangath will say,
"Wahe Guru Ji Ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru Ji Ki Fateh"
「Wahe Guru, Whaa‑hay Guroo Ji Ka Khalsa, Wahe Guru, Whaa‑hay Guroo Ji Ki Fateh」
And they told what they need and then people in congregation after the service is over just go up to him and give him money or whatever they need. And another form that it took in much deeper sense is that people would come into the Saad Sangat because that's where everyone is gathered and we call it Saad Sangat because Saad, Saad from the word Sadhu comes from Saad, Saad means the disciplined one, Saad. And Saad Sangat, Sangat means congregation now you can have a congregation of water buffalos or thieves or anything, what you say I am going to the Sangat.
Sangat, Sangat means congregation now you can have a congregation of water buffalos or thieves or anything, what you say I am going to the Sangat. No, yes I am going to the Saad Sangat because Saad means the disciplined ones or ones who are trying to become discipline.
So just an ordinary person will come to Saad Sangat and because of this vibration of the Guru being in the Saad Sangat because when Guru Gobind Singh installed the Khalsa he talked about the Guru, that the five and you know they were five Amritdhari Sikhs will be the Guru.
So Saad Sangat actually is the Guru also and that's why sometime when we bow before the Guru Granth Sahib we turn around to the Saad Sangat and bow also because the Guru is in Saad Sangat and that's why some of us would come to Saad Sangat and ask them to pray my aunt is sick, my mother is dying or something or my baby was born could you seek the blessings. And by the time of Guru Har Gobind sixth Guru he also came into the Saad Sangat and he used to ask for Saad Sangat to pray for him. And by that time the Ardas the Sikh prayer became a regular part of the congregational ceremonies and procedures.
ask for Saad Sangat to pray for him. And by that time the Ardas the Sikh prayer became a regular part of the congregational ceremonies and procedures.
And then by the time of Guru Gobind Singh he was he who formalized the Ardas and this particular Ardas which we call the Sikh Ardas that we do everyday in the morning and after our different ceremonies and procedures is what we specifically going to be talking about today.
For those of you have a nick name or will be good if you got it out then you could follow along with me, there are all six or seven nick names in the front of the Guru so if you would like to go and get one you can.

What I have before me is a few different Ardases, because Ardas is very (?) we'll go through it and I'll explain. The first concept about the Sikh Ardas is that any one in the Saad Sangat can recite the Ardas for the whole congregation it doesn't have to be anybody in particular everyone in the Saad Sangat is able to do this. But they are few qualities about the person doing the Ardas that should be noted. One, the person doing the Ardas should have a relationship with his own Guru and his belief in God should be such that the person who is reading Ardas has that belief and concept within himself that he feels that his prayer will be answered.
in God should be such that the person who is reading Ardas has that belief and concept within himself that he feels that his prayer will be answered.
Because if somebody is getting up to do the Ardas who is just doing a ritual then naturally he is not vibrating and he is not going to vibrate to God and he is not going to vibrate so that effect comes. So the person who does Ardas first one has to feel that he believes in God he is praying to he has to feel that his Guru, his every breath, his soul, his being. And secondly, he should understand what he is praying for and to whom he is praying and what his prayer is.
his every breath, his soul, his being. And secondly, he should understand what he is praying for and to whom he is praying and what his prayer is.
If you don't know any Gurumukhi let us say and you pick up the peace lagoon and you read the prayers and you say, those who were broken by the wheel cut up limb by limb and you don't know what you are talking about, like who is cut up limb by limb what does that mean? What happened, what we are talking about? If we don't understand that then the prayer for us is just you are repeating words. So prayer means like we stated in the beginning that your mind is totally merged with that being unto to whom you are praying, the polarity of yourself. So that's why it is important for all Sikhs and all to know exactly what parts of the prayer.
Now the first part of the prayer the Sikh Ardas that we are talking about, that we go through.
and all to know exactly what parts of the prayer.
Now the first part of the prayer the Sikh Ardas that we are talking about, that we go through.
I'll go through it in Gurumukhi in line by line and also the English translation. And what I am doing is taking this Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak committee the SGPC, which is the ruling body of the Sikhs the committee that was formed to make the decisions about our code and conduct. And I am going to take the basic Ardas that's written in the current Nith Nem as a basis for the class and I'll also tell you as we go along the variations that can be.
Now the first part of the prayer, the general division of the prayer is, the first part is that which was written by Guru Gobind Singh. And I will read to you first in Gurumukhi what that part was and then I'll explain. Now this first part was written by Guru Gobind Singh,
"Ek Ong Kaar Wahe Guru Ki Fateh"
「Ek Ong Kaar Wahe Guru, Whaa‑hay Guroo Ki Fateh」
(Punjabi)
Gurumukhi what that part was and then I'll explain. Now this first part was written by Guru Gobind Singh,
"Ek Ong Kaar Wahe Guru Ki Fateh"
「Ek Ong Kaar Wahe Guru, Whaa‑hay Guroo Ki Fateh」
(Punjabi)
In the Gurumukhi that was written by Guru Gobind Singh the first part. In English the translation would be now, the translation is Ardas's prayer, Ik ong kaar there is one God, Wahe Guruji the soul, that being Wahe Guru, Ji ki Fateh, victory Fateh right, Fateh means victory, Ki it means belong to. So Ik ong kaar Wahe Guruji ki Fateh, victory to that one Creator that wonderful lord, the ecstasy of experience in experience in that God, victory to that vibration. Then Siri Bhagavathi ki sahey, and what Guru Gobind Singh is doing is he is calling to God in the form of the sword.
He is the first one who called who talked to God in the form of the sword that power that strength of that protection of God as a sword. So Siri means great, Bhagvathi as the sword, Ji sahey, sahey means protection. Protection sanctuary, so according to yes, Ji means soul, actually.

Student: (....)

Student: Yeah, Siri Bhagavathi ji that being, so that high essence.

Student: Right, right God is the sword, right, because the physical sword represents that also represents that protecting steel strength that whole concept of steel and what the sword is.
right, because the physical sword represents that also represents that protecting steel strength that whole concept of steel and what the sword is.
Vaar is a tail, it is usually in praise of some great being Vaar is an oad this oad Vaar is Siri bhagvathi ji ki patsahe dusvee, this oad is by the tenth Guru, patsahey means true king dus, number one and a zero that's ten. This is the Vaar of the tenth Guru, this is the oad through the sword to God is the sword of the tenth Guru. So this is an Oad not in praise of a man or a Goddess or a God, but in praise of the sword. God is that protective entity.
Pritham, first, the primal, pritham Bhagvathi simrikhey, simrikhey means keh when you use keh like that means after having remembered, after having done something when you say the keh, Simrikhey is simer, simeran means remembrance. After having remembered the sword pritham bhagavathi first, pritham bhagavathe simrikhey, after having first remembered that Adi, we call the Adi Shakti principle, that's how we say it. After first remembering the Adi Shakti the primal power that's bhagvathi the Adi Shakti.
Yes please?

Guru Nanak lehthiyah, then meditate on that power, that Adi Shakti principle coming through Guru Nanak, it is not that we are meditating on Guru Nanak the body, that primal force first we are remembering infinite God and then the Guru is saying, after that remembering that infinite God we are meditating on those consciousness, those consciousness is which that primal powers come through. Nanak phir means then, afterwards.

Arjun Hargobino simrao siri haraey, Arjun Guru Arjun., Hargobind he is the sixth Guru. Hargobindno, simrao again remembrance, Siri Har Rai, so he is going to through Gurus. Siri Hari Krishan, that is eighth Guru, dhiaya having meditating upon him,
Jisey dittey sab dukh jaay, now jis is he who ditey, ditey is the vision. If you have the vision of him he who has the vision of Siri Hari Krishan, sab all, dukh, dukh means sorrow, sickness, all that poison die, goes just having the vision of Hari Krishan.
who has the vision of Siri Hari Krishan, sab all, dukh, dukh means sorrow, sickness, all that poison die, goes just having the vision of Hari Krishan.
So this story is you know when Guru Hari Krishan is only five years old, six years old year, ten years old, eight years old when he died, people just used to look on his face, his radiance was so such that people would be cured of their illness and he had there is a great Plague going around Delhi at the time of his life and he sacrificed himself to save everyone of that Plague and people just used to look on him or he used to come in his aura and they will be cured, so that's why we say if you just have that vision of Guru Hari Krishan, now how, what about for us in the present day, how does that apply to us, right?
Because Guru Hari Krishan is not manifested in a physical form at this time, but if you meditate on that that essence of him and that faith in yourself you recall that faith in that being to cure you then all your sorrows and all your sickness go.

Teg Bhadur that's the ninth Guru, Teg Bhadur, simriya having remembered him, meditating on that essence, ghar is house, your house, navnidh, nine treasures, aveydhai, they will come hastening, aveh is shall come, may come, dahe, again it's the form of the verb.

The nine treasures are earthly treasures and the eight volume in the back of the Mann Mohan they are listed nine treasures, there is something like gold and silver and ability to trade in gold and silver and martial arts and sexual power and wealth and few other things like that, earthly treasures. If you meditate upon the essence of Guru Teg Bahadur then these treasures shall come hastening to your home.

Okay now that's what Guru Gobind Singh wrote, okay and at the end of the Ardas he wrote,

"Nanak Naam Cherdi Kalaa, Tere Paane Sarbat Daa Bhalaa. "

"Nanak Naam Cherdi Kalaa, Tere Paane Sarbat Daa Bhalaa. "
「Nanak Naam Cherdi Kalaa, Tere Paane Sarbat Daa Bhalaa。」
And it means Nanak Naam Nanak again Nanak through the face of Nanak, witnessing of Nanak, belief in Nanak, through Nanak also another way of interpreting in this, the word coming through Nanak. The teachings coming through Nanak. Nanak Naam, through Nanak Naam may the name that essence of that whole definition, through Nanak, chardee kalaa, through Nanak the name, through Nanak in the name, chardee kalaa actually means chardee means onward and upward, chardee. Kalaa may your Kundalini rise, kalaa is that spirit, the Kundalini. May through the name your spirit rise, the exalt may your Kundalini rise, may your consciousness rise through the name.
Terey baney and according to your will, by your will sarbat, all the totality of mankind, balaa means goodness, prosperity. You know total goodness and vitality and prosperity.
to your will, by your will sarbat, all the totality of mankind, balaa means goodness, prosperity. You know total goodness and vitality and prosperity.
May all men, sarbat, prosper of you know by your will, according to your will as you will let all men prosper and the beauty of this ending is, is being very specific first in saying through Nanak in the name, may our consciousness rise may we merge together in the naam in the essence, may we vibrate to that essence and then the Guru in accordance to his teachings may all men regardless of who they are and what they believe in let everybody prosper, so that's another beautiful aspect of the Sikh dharma that from our very specific discipline, our very specific form or totality of encompassing everybody in our prayers.

Okay now that's the first part written by Guru Gobind Singh. Now then we come to the part of the prayer which was put together by the khalsa after Guru Gobind Singh. And then what was there it was Dusvah Patsha the tenth king now the Sikh Gurus who call Patsah, king, and you sometime say, sachey patsah which means Sach the truth, sachey patsah, the true king. So dusvah, now dus, ek, doh, teen, char, paanch, chey, saath aat nou dus, ten, dus means ten, dusvah is a form, an oblique form which means ten. Dusvah...
Dusvah……

And Dar means the wear of one who wears the kalgi, kalgi dur we sometime say. Param pita, the father, now param param padh is the highest state of consciousness, highest state of consciousness is father of that, or dharam pita the father of the khalsa, the dharam the path of righteousness the father of that. (?) Guru Gobind Singh protector of the faith, master of the unity right, because his whole teaching was to unify mankind so he was a master of putting this unity, master of unity may protect us everywhere. Okay then of course that manifestation of pritham bagavati coming to the ten Gurus finally into great Guru is Guru Gobind Singh protector the fifth master of the unity may protect us everywhere. The light of the ten Gurus, now the whole idea of jyoth the light of the ten Guru is because when we associate light we associate light with consciousness, aura, right, probably it comes from the light of the being, the aura, consciousness.
The consciousness that consciousness that essence of that pritham bhagvati coming through the ten Gurus into the Siri Guru Granth Sahib is next, so we say, dasah patsahiyah, the jyoth, the light of the ten Gurus, dussah, again dus, the ten Gurus pathshah, pathshayia deep jyoth, Siri Guru Granth sahib jee, they part. Part is recitation.

The Dar again is like a darshan, (?) boloji Siri Wahe Guru. The dhyan by meditating upon the recitation of Siri Guru Granth Sahib meditate upon this recitation. Oh khalsa ji and call on God, we say Bolo, Bolo means speak. It's a command, Bolo speak.
Dar 又像是 darshan,(?)boloji Siri Wahe Guru, Whaa‑hay Guroo。
dhyan again is meditation, dhar key, having had the sight of having had the darshan now what you hear dharshan, what is darshan? Having had the sight of or having had the vision up what is that mean that is that I am seeing with my physical eyes the Guru? Or I am coming into the presence of somebody and I see them I am having a darshan and otherwise say spoke to me? What is that idea of having the sight of, or having a darshan? It means that darshan is not sight with the physical eyes, but it is that merging of consciousness again. It is having the experience of somebody that's their darshan.
is not sight with the physical eyes, but it is that merging of consciousness again. It is having the experience of somebody that's their darshan.
It is not that they are being in a presence they are playing checkers and you are thinking about one thing nothing but, but the idea of merging in consciousness having an experience of each other, so when you are having a darshan of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib or having had the sight of the Guru Granth Sahib it is that experience of the Guru. And then we say call on God, meditate upon this and call on God because what you do when there is nothing else to say when you had a great time, just say Wahe Guru.
Oh God that was great, you know so what else can you do when you have that experience except call on God, so everybody together is a Saad Sangat the one who is leading us near Ardas will say boloji, means speak and speak or you know call, Wahe Guru. So everybody together chants, chant Wahe Guru in the name of God because together were are in vibration and it's a congregational prayer. Sometimes if those of you who are working on the Gurumukhi now they are different adjectives that we give in this part, you have some written down in that?

Another thing sometime you say is the Atmic Shakti, the Shakti is the power and atma is that Supreme Being, atmic Shakti that, that power that Supreme Being we relate to the Guru Granth Sahib. Shabad Swaroop, shabad is the word, Swaroop is the form, the body of the word, the embodiment of the word, (?) its present before us, its being is right here. (?)

Now we come into the second part of the Ardas we are remembering our history because this part was composed by generations of Sikhs every time an event happened something was added to the Ardas, now sometime you can add specific terms or you can generally say these are the most generally you can say is those who remember the name and all our martyrs who sacrificed themselves. But we want to really remember, really meditate on this, it is important because we want to recall our heritage, what is it that brought us to where we are today and this is what we are going to go over specifically now.

Then Chouha Sahabzadiya now Sahib, sahib again that respectful term master, Zadi the children, the children of four children means Sahib Zadi is respectful way of saying the Guru's children and when you have taken Amrit you before you take Amrit and you are Sikh right and you learn about the dharma, you are a Sardani if you are a woman or a sardar if you are a Sikh man. But when you become khalsa? They said, "Are you kidding we are the sons of Guru Gobind Singh. "

After we remember those people who meditated upon the naam, then we remember the martyrs those people who actually sacrifice themselves so that we could practice that dharma so you even have the teachings, because there has been a great conspiracy throughout history to get rid of the Sikhs because nobody wants unity and nobody wants everybody to be equal because they are not means those in power can't wheel their power if everybody is equal. Bandh bandh katayi they were cut up limb by limb, now this is the story by Mani Singh and this story themselves are class but just briefly Bhai Mani Singh, was a playmate of Guru Gobind Singh from a very young age, his father came to the court of Guru Teg Bhadur and Gobind Rai who is Gobind Singh was that time Gobind Rai and Mani became very close friends and so his father decided to leave him in the court of the Guru and they grew up together and Bhai Mani Singh is one of the great scholars of the times.

And he was the man to whom Guru Gobind Singh dictated the whole Guru Granth Sahib by heart when they couldn't get a copy of it and he also and after Guru Gobind Singh died he became head priest of the golden temple, he was requested to go up there and be the head priest of the golden temple and he was a great scholar and a great aide in the court of the Guru Bhai Mani Singh. And when they wanted to sacrifice him they called him and want to sacrifice for the Moguls, and they said, "We are going to cut you up limb by limb if you don't accept Islam? "
He said, "Okay cut me up limb by limb it doesn't matter I belong to my Guru I can't belong to Islam. "
And so when they started to cut off his finger here, he said, "Wait cut here this is the limb, you want to cut me up limb by limb you start here. "
And it really freaked them out, it was really freaking them out. That's the expression goes.

Okay, bandh bandh katayi and then we have khopdiya lohaiya now khopdiya lohaiya is who had their scalps removed like Bhai Padu Singh and you know in the seventeen hundreds the Sikhs we weren't allowed to live anywhere, we lived on horseback, we lived in jungles because they didn't allow us to live, there was a price on that for every Sikh they wanted to (?) and us and Bhai Padu Singh was very humble farmer and he grew crops and he used to take all his crops and then he used to go inside the jungles and feed all the Sikhs who were hiding out.
He said, "You can't cut my hair off, it belongs to the Guru. "
